Appeals Court to mediate over 60 cases in a day

Sunday, 4th September 2017

"In a move meant to reduce case backlog the Court of Appeal is now set to handle at least 61 cases in a day through appellate mediation, the newest alternative dispute mechanism.

According to the judiciary public relations officer Vincent Mugabo, the pilot is in respect to miscellaneous applications which form the highest backlog in the court and if dealt with expeditiously, it will make the work of the Court of Appeal in respect to the handling of the main suits easier.

Mugabo says the list of cases for mediation include that of the Electoral Commission Vs Erias Lukwago and Bob Kasango Vs Paul Nalukoola Muwanga among others.

However parties that are dissatisfied with the outcome of the high court will have opportunity to settle their appeals quickly with the parties they dragged to this court and judges who will participate in the mediation process will not be allowed to handle that same matter once mediation fails."
