MI Resolve: New, free tool launched by state Supreme Court working to close justice gap

"ANN ARBOR, Mich. — More than 2 million Michiganders qualify for assistance when dealing with civil legal issues, but the resources to help aren’t always available.

Legal Services Corporation, LSC, is a national entity that works to secure and distribute federal funds to states to implement legal aid clinics around the country for the estimated 60 million people who live at or below 125% of the federal poverty line and therefore, qualify for assistance. It’s an issue that plagues communities across the country, but one of the biggest hurdles is funding.

Legal aid clinics work with clients who need civil legal assistance with legal matters, like landlord-tenant issues, difficulties getting access to earned veteran benefits, custody debates, divorces, among others. If someone is accused of committing a crime and can’t afford an attorney, the U.S. Constitution guarantees representation for people who find themselves in hot water with the law and don’t have the cash to hire help. The same guarantees don’t exist for people who have an onslaught of civil legal problems."
